Concealing the Cybertruck: Filming challenges and discrete locations in Iceland

Updated: Aug 29

Creating a launch video for the highly anticipated Cybertruck was a significant challenge. The team encountered multiple obstacles, especially while filming in the stunning yet unpredictable landscapes of Iceland. Their aim was not only to showcase the capabilities of the Cybertruck but also to keep its final design a secret from the public. This post explores the unique filming locations, the challenges encountered during production, and the imaginative solutions that emerged along the way.

The Allure of Iceland

Iceland is famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, with landscapes ranging from towering volcanic mountains to serene glaciers. This stunning environment served as the perfect backdrop for the Cybertruck launch video. The team sought locations that would not just highlight the vehicle's ruggedness but also maintain an air of mystery.

The choice to film in Iceland was driven by a desire to capture the spirit of adventure. The terrain's stark contrasts—black sand beaches, icy glaciers, and lush green valleys—offered a vibrant canvas that aligned with the Cybertruck's adventurous image.

Discrete Locations: A Treasure Hunt

Finding ideal filming spots in Iceland was like a treasure hunt. The team searched the island for the perfect gems that could provide the perfect setting for the Cybertruck. From secluded mountaintop to deserted volcanic landscapes, each location was meticulously chosen to enhance the narrative of the video.

One standout and most tricky spot was driving the Cybertruck on top of Langjokull glacier, were the Cybertruck would be in the open around tourists driving snowmobiles with guides. And yes, there was someone that spotted the beast driving on the glacier. But where else would it have been ok to have footage of the Cybertruck than driving on top of a glacier in Iceland. :)

The Challenge of Secrecy

The breathtaking scenery was a double-edged sword, presenting a challenge in keeping the Cybertruck under wraps. As the vehicle's design began generating excitement, the crew needed to be clever about their filming techniques.

To preserve the surprise, the team employed various strategies. They utilized drone shots to capture the Cybertruck from above while ensuring the landscape partially obscured the vehicle. They also scheduled filming during early mornings or late evenings to avoid curious onlookers. Filming at odd hours kept the design from leaking before the official launch, echoing the efforts of movie studios that schedule key shoots in secret for high-stakes projects.

Moreover, to avoid attracting attention, the crew opted for compact filming gear that could be easily transported to remote locations. This clever choice not only helped keep the Cybertruck under wraps but also allowed them to capture those spontaneous, breathtaking moments.

Weather Woes

The unpredictable weather in Iceland posed significant challenges for the filming team usually. But it was like the weather gods where by our side. Every day was perfect and that makes writing about the weather just boring :)

The Final Reveal

After weeks of filming in Iceland's hidden spots, the team returned with a wealth of footage. The editing process was equally challenging; they had to weave together the diverse elements captured in various landscapes.

The final launch video was an impressive showcase of the Cybertruck's capabilities, beautifully set against Iceland's stunning backdrop. The mix of locations, creative filming techniques, and perfect weather resulted in a visually engaging narrative that connected with viewers. It demonstrated how the Cybertruck is not just a vehicle but also a symbol of exploration and innovation.

At start the plan was only to use a small part of the footage from Iceland and use more from the US, but in the editing room they found it hard to not give Iceland more visual credit, resulting in 90% of the final edit was Iceland.
